Welcome to Upcountry
A scenic farmland utopia along the base of the Haleakala volcano.
Upcountry Maui, nestled on the western slope of the Haleakala volcano, is surrounded by expansive farmlands, gardens, and ranches. Rolling hills stretch across the sprawling landscape, and because it has a higher elevation than other Maui towns, Upcountry is a bit cooler throughout the year and is located about an hour from the resorts and beaches.
Upcountry is also known for having some of the most expansive and substantial farmlands in the state of Hawaii. “Upcountry” may be a beautiful location in Maui, but it is also a way of life. Folks who live in this region are proud of the laid-back country lifestyle and proudly uphold their paniolo (cowboy) reputations.
What to Love
Local Lifestyle
The bohemian neighborhoods of Upcountry include Kula, Makawao Pukalani. The people of this area are community-centered — everyone knows your name here, and everyone is welcomed with traditional Hawaiian spirit. Charming residents match the charming atmosphere of the area, and although it may take a few minutes to reach the beach, Upcountry offers plenty to do and see on the island. Upcountry is the perfect place to live if you enjoy scenic views, encouraging neighbors who value culture and sustainability, and peaceful moments in the mountains.
Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping
Kula Bistro sits alongside the Haleakala volcano and offers fresh, local ingredients from the farmlands of Upcountry. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this charming restaurant specializes in quality, homestyle Italian food. In business since 2012, Kula Bistro offers Upcountry residents affordable and finely crafted food.
Between the north and south shores of Maui lies an 80-acre Ocean Organic Vodka, a unique sea spirits organic farm and distillery. They are committed to sustainable practices and provide tours of the farm, demonstrations on how their vodka is made, and a gift shop and cafe.
If vodka isn’t what you’re looking for in Upcountry, try MauiWine, an “elevated way to see and taste Maui.” With a stunning pastoral drive to the historic ʻUlupalakua Ranch, MauiWine offers a beautifully crafted wine tasting experience. Over 150 years ago, King Kalākaua lived on this land, and today, guests can meander through the old gardens and tour the King’s Cottage Tasting Room. MauiWine’s list is extensive, but they are known for their pineapple flavors.
Things to Do
For a “uniquely Upcountry” experience, visit the Upcountry Farmers Market in Pukalani. A community favorite for over 40 years, the farmers’ market has become routine for residents of Upcountry. Every Saturday morning, residents set up their stands or browse the aisles for fresh produce, handmade gifts, and delicious food. The mission of the farmer's market is to gather together to celebrate life, aloha, and the beauty of fresh, healthy food.
Owned by a husband and wife team with the self-proclaimed gift of gab, Maui Country Farm Tours seeks to educate others on the importance of supporting local farms. The future of Hawaii depends on supporting and sustaining the local farmers throughout the islands. The agricultural paradise of the islands is quickly diminishing, but with Marilyn and Rick as your guide, you’ll learn ways to help improve the farming system and create a flourishing industry once again.
This American National Park is home to exotic animals, volcanic landscapes, and subtropical rainforests. Haleakala National Park protects the bonds between land and people and hopes to teach visitors about traditional Hawaiian culture and history. The park is also an International Biosphere Reserve — its biggest job is to support and project the natural volcanic landscape. You can hike and camp at Haleakala and learn more about the land’s history from local rangers and educational centers within the park.
Makawao Forest Reserve is a popular hiking spot and features unparalleled views of the ocean below the trails. The reserve also has some of the best trails for mountain biking, and with its higher elevation and cooler temperatures, it makes for the perfect environment to enjoy exercising outdoors.
