Welcome to Central Maui
A bustling main hub area with an old town feel.
With the largest population in Maui, Central Maui is home to a bustling downtown district, endless shopping and entertainment possibilities, and the one and only Costco on the island. The major hospitals and government buildings are located in this area, making Central Maui the “hub” of Maui life. Old historic buildings on Main Street in downtown Wailuku mix with the modern, industrial architecture of newer, chic businesses, showcasing the best of both worlds in one location.
What to Love
Local Lifestyle
Residents of Central Maui live in the Wailuku and Kahului neighborhoods. There are abundant outdoor activities available, and thanks to the proximity to the Kahului Airport, there are more dining, entertainment, and shopping opportunities here. Most residents are young professionals working in the business district, families, and retirees, and the neighborhoods feature single-family homes, apartment buildings, and condominiums.
Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping
Bistro Casanova presents Maui with a romantic dining opportunity. Their award-winning elegant menu and five-star atmosphere have made Bistro Casanova a popular stopping point for Maui residents and tourists. With its proximity to the airport and Maui Seaside Hotel, the bistro serves thousands of guests and presents a great first impression to tourists. Menu items include classic Italian fares like homemade flatbreads and fresh bruschetta for tapas and rigatoni carbonara and chicken parmesan for dinner.
Award-winning restaurant Tight Tacos is known throughout the island for having the best tacos. This authentic taqueria offers delectable, mouth-watering taco creations for the residents and tourists of Maui and specializes in crafting the perfect takeout menu. Fresh, hand-pressed tortillas are made daily and wrapped around signature tacos like Carnitas and Pollo Pibil. Their motto is to provide customers with “aloha as warm as their tortillas!”
For a casual lunch, stop by Tinroof in Kahului. A mom-and-pop shop owned and operated by chef Sheldon Simeon and his business partner and wife, Janice, Tin roof is the best place to experience fresh, traditional, and creative island fare. Menu items include a Mochiko chicken, marinated in ginger sake overnight, and a roasted and deep-fried pork belly. Top off your meal with a chocolate mochi cake for dessert!
Queen Ka’ahumanu Shopping Mall offers Central Maui residents more than 100 name-brand and island-specific stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. It’s the largest shopping center on the entire island and includes a premier six-screen movie theater. QKC also hosts over 300 events each year, like their farmers market, concert series, and pop-up shops.
Things to Do
Sunday evenings at the Kahului Shopping Center bring fun for the entire ohana! The Maui Sunday Market is held from 4-8 p.m. and offers great local food, shopping, prizes, and fantastic live entertainment. The market was initially created by members of the Maui Food Technology Center, who recognized a need to revitalize the Kahului community. The goal was to draw visitors to weekly markets to share stories, experience the diversity of Hawaiian flavors (from cuisine to dancing and traditions) and experience a strong sense of community ties. The market is held each week and draws hundreds of community members and tourists, drawing on the true spirit of aloha.
Saturday mornings at Maui College are lively and energetic. Each week, the college hosts the Maui Swap Meet. It’s been a Maui tradition since 1981 and residents and tourists alike wander the aisles to find the best bargains. Over 200 vendors and thousands of customers show up every Saturday morning, and there are plenty of food trucks offering the best flavors of Maui.
